It picked up right where the first one ended, but became way more creepy. It ended on a great cliffhanger, but I wasn’t invested enough to pick up the sequel immediately. By about the last third of the book things really started picking up and I couldn’t put the book down. It was entertaining and Hodkin’s writing ended with a cliffhanger at the end of just about every chapter. I wasn’t really sure if it was a mystery, paranormal, or both, but I really enjoyed it. While I was reading the first book, it seemed like a contemporary with a creepy twist. I mean, he has a British accent and that I-look-perfectly-disheveled-and-delectable-without-trying thing going for him too. Even though I could never get that attached to Mara throughout the series, I was so invested in Noah. He is the epitome of a bookish boyfriend and I love love love his character. That is how Mara and her family end up in Miami, Florida and how Mara begins attending a prestigious new school. Her mother decides that it will be a good idea for the family to move away from Rhode Island so Mara can start fresh. Most of these come in the form of flashbacks as she tries to piece together the real story of what happened to her. Strange things start happening to Mara after the accident–things she can’t explain or understand. It is soon revealed that her best friend (Rachel), her boyfriend (Jude), and Jude’s twin sister are all involved in a horrible accident in an abandoned asylum. The first book has a creepy start as Mara wakes up in a hospital with no memory of how she got there.
